PHOTOGRAPHICAL AND TYPOLOGICAL INVENTORY

B3 - TRANSPORTABLE-GARDENS

The Hadramaut valley and the ancient walled town of Shibam surrounded by the embankments and the channels of the traditional system of flood sharing and cultivation of the fields, most of which are now abandoned.
The caves, as Palaeolithic temples of memory and central elements of stability in the network of mobility, were the places where the vestal virgins kept their transportable gardens containing aromatic, medical or hallucinogenic plants; guarded the fire, harvested the water, decorated the walls and looked after the first animal-marvels that were the result of domestication. These caves were the centres of subsequent productive changes in the environment.
